The Salon: DESMONDS ran for 6 years on the UK's channel 4 from 1989 to 1995. Dominic appeared in the first 5 seasons, being introduced in the third episode of the first series and staying on as a regular cast member until the last series. Vital stats: Character Description: Tony studied for 5 years at a top acadamy, and somehow he ended up at Desmonds barber shop! He once wanted to be a model but was told he was too short, instead he discovered he had talent in his hands and took up hair styling. What with his talents and good looks, surely it was a recipe for success. Somewhere along the line Desmond began to loosen up around Tony considering the trendy
stylist had a jazz and blues collection in Desmond's tastes, including some 'rare
grooves'. Not to mention that Tony brought in 50% more takings than usual! Show Description: Desmonds can be considered revolutionary in the UK during the late 1980s. Generally seen as the british version of the Cosby Show, it was the first tv comedy to focus on black society in Britain. Norman Beaton starred as Desmond Ambrose, an immigrant from Guyana now running his own barbershop with the help of wife Shirley (Carmen Munroe). The shop doubles up as a gathering place for the community. Porkpie (an old friend
from Guyana), Matthew (a student from Africa), son's Michael and Sean, daughter Gloria,
and friends Lee, Tony, Louise and other, more insane family members all come to visit
to make Desmond's life hell.
